What is Curacao? Well, Curacao is an island country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Holland) located in the Lesser Antilles, in the south of the Caribbean Sea.

Over the years, this place has begun to become more and more famous due to its immense natural beauties that are attractive to people from all over the world at any time of the year.

Complete guide to Lisbon: what to do in the Portuguese capital! Today we will show you the best places to visit!

Being a Dutch island, you probably already know that it is very beautiful, as Holland can be considered one of the most beautiful countries in terms of nature.

Despite being part of the Netherlands, Curaçao remains an independent country from the Netherlands. However, this independence is relatively recent, having only been granted in 2010 (although it is not a completely autonomous country).

If you like beaches with turquoise and crystal clear waters, then Curacao is for you. It is a tropical paradise ideal for leisure, marine life, divers or simply relaxing to the sound of the waves. We will provide you with more information below.

How long should you stay in Curacao?

The island is quite small, with an area of only 444 km². With a car, you can travel from north to south with complete freedom. This trip will help you learn more about the island and what it has to offer, even if you only have a few days.

It is important to note that a 5-6 day itinerary is a normal duration to explore the entire island or at least the most important places. Of course, the pace can vary from person to person. If you prefer a more relaxed approach, it is advisable to take more time on your vacation, especially if you are traveling with children.

What to do in Curacao?

If you visit Curacao, the first thing you should do is visit the beautiful beaches that the island offers. Curacao has more than 30 beaches to visit, all of them with warm waters and a unique experience for you and your family.

Another thing you can do is visit the capital of the island and explore it, see incredible monuments and historical places that provide a lot of history. We will now provide you with more information on how you can enjoy your free time in Curacao.

Visit the capital

The capital of Curacao is Willemstad. Like the entire country, Willemstad was colonized by Holland, so you will see many Dutch influences in the architecture, colors used, and art. In addition, the capital is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historic center.

You can visit many things in Willemstad, such as the Queen Juliana Bridge (one of the highest in the world, at 56 meters), which offers a panoramic view of the place. The capital is easy to access and you will use it a lot during your trip.

Punda District

This is the oldest historic district in Curaçao, founded in 1634, the year the Dutch finally conquered the island. You can freely visit all its historical points, such as the Reina Koningin Wilhelmina Square, which is a very beautiful place, or Fort Amsterdam.

In this district, you don't have to worry about the language, as not only Dutch, but also other languages such as Creole, Portuguese, English and Spanish are spoken, making it very accessible to tourists from all over. Please note that Punda is mainly a daytime area and everything closes at 6pm, and on Sundays nothing is open.

Scharloo District

Another district you must visit is Scharloo. This is a historic area which is located near Punda. While it doesn't have many tourist attractions, you can still enjoy the view of beautiful mansions and houses.

Pietermaai District

If you like cafes, boutiques, restaurants, shops and more, then this is the district for you. Here you will find everything we have mentioned and much more. Unlike the previous district, here you will find a more lively and active nightlife.

Otrobanda District

The last place we will talk about today is this district. You can visit it from Punda and it is a beautiful district. It is noted for its incredible artistic developments in architecture, houses and dwellings. This is because at the beginning of the 18th century, it was occupied by black people freed from slavery, so there are many marks of paintings from that time and more recent times.

This area is full of art and history. The main point is the Kura Hulanda Anthropological Museum, where you will find more information about this town and its history in depth. If you want to visit it, start in Punda, cross the Queen Emma Floating Bridge and you will reach Otrobanda.
